I learned something really cool this week. It is an application called Hootsuite which is a social media management platform! It’s great. This year I have started to look into social media sites other than Facebook. I can’t say in all honesty that I am populating all of the sites I have with regular content, however I’m learning about which ones are useful for me or will be potentially useful going forward. So now I’m currently on Facebook, Google+, Pintrest, Twitter, Youtube, Tumblr and LinkedIn. Even for somebody who might be a social media guru, that’s a lot of different platforms to get your head around! The ones I use most are Facebook, LinkedIn and Youtube, though I really have to update my own Youtube page. In fact I need to start from scratch as the name of it is no longer appropriate to me. (caitrionainghana from when I was volunteering over there). I have loads of Youtube videos but they are all on different organisation’s websites. Consider it put on the immediate to do list!
I can see the value in Twitter, but to be honest, I just don’t know what to be saying day to day, hour to hour, and I hate spamming people with drivel.
Anyway, back on topic. The problem with being involved in a number of social media platforms is that there isn’t enough hours in the day to be populating them…
And the magic acorn falling from the sky is…..HootSuite.
Basically it acts like a dashboard. You can add the social media platforms that you use onto it and do all your comments, blogs, retweets, feedback, reading etc. from the one place. Its amazing. You can also schedule when you want messages to be posted. This is really useful as sometimes you might have a block of time in which you can give to populating your social media accounts, but you don’t want it all coming through at the same time, right? So just schedule things for hours, days, even weeks ahead! The downside to this is that things you schedule to post in advance may not be so current and relevant when the post is displayed. Just a small thing to be wary of.
I need a lot more work to discover the full benefits and ins and outs of HootSuite (there are free and premium accounts) but I’m really excited to have found it. Thanks Greg!
