Favourite Social Media Campaign

One of my favourite social media campaigns is Mama Hope ‘Stop the Pity’ campaign. The first video they made was a youtube video called ‘Commando‘ that went viral.

Its a video of a 9 year old boy called Alex from Tanzania summarizing the film Commando. The video is cut between Alex animatedly telling the story and giving insights into Arnold Sschwarzenegger’s character interspersed with clips of the film itself.

The video is very clever because it is not what you expect from a charity organization working in a developing country. We are so used to seeing images of “starving children”, “despondent mothers” disease, war and death when it comes to the ‘developing world. As many of Westerners haven’t been to developing countries it shows what power and influence the media has in creating and building on existing stereotypes that we hold ourselves.

I had the opportunity to volunteer in Ghana last year for 4 month. Sure, there are people living in very different circumstances to here in Ireland, there is mass poverty, lack of education and disease in the country but that is only one side to the country. There are wonderful people living, working, growing their communities, using social media, watching films and living not dissimilar lives to people in the West. Sure the environment is different and the standard of living is not comparable to that in the West but in the end of the day people are people!

That’s why I like this campaign so much. It dispels ingrained stereotypes and looks at bringing people closer together rather than creating these counterproductive human and cultural barriers such as us and them, rich and poor, lucky and to be pitied people.

Webactivate-Working with SMEs

As part of the webactivate course that I’m currently studying, we have had the opportunity to work with SMEs to create their websites, optimize their SEO and to integrate  their social media platforms into their websites. I have worked on three different projects thus far. The first one was for http://www.paulosheamotors.com, a small garage in Castletownbere, West Cork. Looking back on it now I was such a newbie back then! I had the role of creating content for the website and looking up some stock images for his site. It was difficult to do as our client did not give us the necessary information on the models of cars that he sold. I had to research other motor websites to see the terminology used for these types of industries.

Our second project was legourmetireland.com, a gourmet deli and bakery in Youghal. This was a much more interesting build. My role in this was the project manager. We went down for a site visit and I interviewed him while the other team members took photographs for the site. We all contributed to different potential wire-frames for the site and then voted on which one we liked best. I found it easy to deal with my client and learned that we should focus on his catering services to maximise potential profit which could be gleaned from the website. There was a smaller number in this team build and it worked much more effectively…Better for getting stuck into the work. I enjoyed being project manager and evrything went timely without too much hiccups.

For the last site that we build I was involved more in the wireframes, mock-ups and actual build of the site. This site was bluettspharmacy.com, based in Clonakilty. Muireann was the project manager, but we had the opportunity to go down, get a feel for the place and take some photographs while we were there. I found that I learned the most out of this experience and hope to be involved in mock-ups and builds for any further projects. The owner wanted his site to come up high in the Google rankings as there are 4 other pharmacies in Clonakilty. We therefore paid a great detail to SEO for this project. It was our first project using WordPress, which is also far more superior to Easy Site Wizard.

Our next SME…A carpenters…Best get the hard thinking hat on!

4Square Pizza

Social Media Platforms are coming at us from all angles every day. This week I learned about 2 new social media platforms. One is called 4square, or 4square pizza as I so aptly renamed it (even if I do say so myself!) Now I have to be honest with you guys…I just don’t get it! Its a location based app for mobile devices that allows you to check into places. So if you’re in McDonalds, The Tate Modern, Tescos, The Eiffel Tower, you check in on foursquare and the world checks in back with you whether they want to or not!  I’m sick of hearing about where people had there last cup of tea, or that they’re at the Bruce Sprinsteen concert that I am not at. What’s more if you check in to places enough you get badges, I mean seriously do we need cyber badges to validate our virtual existence!

Can anyone offer me any rational reasoning into getting in on this new social media platform?

Okay okay so Jon Mitchell tells me it IS useful.

You can turn off the location tags, you can turn off all the gismos, gadgets, badges and silly stuff and use it for recommendations. With over 2 billion people using it to give people the heads up on the best and worst places to buy food, go to a restaurant and places to stay it has some let ups.

Though I’m just not convinced…

It could be useful for avid travelers and I’m told the user experience on this App is top notch.

I fear change…

Maybe next month…

SEO Who???

If a fantastic website lies deep in the realms of the Interweb, but no-body sees it does it still exist?

Well the bear, the tree and the sucker who made the website will all scream as loud as they can for as long as they can to vilify there existence but the simple fact is you will be nowhere to be found without a well optimized website.

Search Engine Optimization is essential for the success of any website. A website can be excellent in and of itself, however if no-one can find it is there any real point in having it. On and Off page SEO both have an important place inorganically moving your websites up the ranks. SEO is a technical operation rather than marketing. It can be laborious, but it is not difficult. It is an evolving process that requires time, patience and incorporation with Google analytics.

SEO needs to be thought about in 2 different ways. There are elements of SEO that are important for both human traffic and search engines (machines), so it is always important to keep this in mind when doing your SEO. For example search engines do not understand metaphors and artistic language so it is best to keep descriptions more logical. Search engines also do not read images, therefore it is important to add an alt tag to each image so that the search engine can read and index them. If they are not correctly labeled then the search engine will see it as a bad link and this in turn will give negative feedback to your rankings.

SEO involves a lot of practice and trial and error. It is not a one stop shop. You need to use Google analytics in conjunction with it and track how your keywords, titles and tags are doing, who is keying in what to get to your website and where they are coming from.  From in-depth analysis you can tweek and edit your SEO and gradually you should see an improvement in your overall organic rankings. Another factor to consider, when wondering how quickly you move up the SEO ladder is that businesses that are more unique and unusual will naturally take less time to be high up on search engines than businesses with a lot more competition. SEO optimization is an ongoing process and needs to be monitored, analysed and evolve.

Essentially

  • Label Everything Correctly
  • Check internal and external links
  • Check for bad coding and dead ends
  • Use H1,H2, H3 tags
  • Use alt text and correct metadescriptions
  • Use Good Keywords (Do your homework with Google Keywords)
  • Use Google search engine to see what words and phrases people type in to get to where you want them to go to.
  • Don’t kill your site with keyword stuffing. Google isn’t just a pretty face. It knows what you’re up to!!!!
  • Update regularly with fresh content
  • Check your progress and revisit

The most important thing is to stock up on lots of cake and coffee and be prepared to have a long and laborious day ahead of you. Not difficult, just soulless!

Guerilla Marketing

Guerrilla  Marketing is an unconventional, often low cost and localised strategy often involving a network of people with the goal of promoting a product or idea. I could write a long article describing the strategies in depth, but in this case, seeing is really believing. Sometimes it takes a minute to cop. Have a look and see for yourself what you think!

Some of them work because they are so funny. Most of them work on the basis that it is not something that you would expect to see in public. I have to say some of the above campaigns relating to domestic violence, poverty and homelessness were really stark and thought provoking.

Mad About Hoot Suite

Hey Folks!

I learned something really cool this week. It is an application called Hootsuite which is a social media management platform! It’s great. This year I have started to look into social media sites other than Facebook. I can’t say in all honesty that I am populating all of the sites I have with regular content, however I’m learning about which ones are useful for me or will be potentially useful going forward. So now I’m currently on Facebook, Google+, Pintrest, Twitter, Youtube, Tumblr and LinkedIn. Even for somebody who might be a social media guru, that’s a lot of different platforms to get your head around! The ones I use most are Facebook, LinkedIn and Youtube, though I really have to update my own Youtube page. In fact I need to start from scratch as the name of it is no longer appropriate to me. (caitrionainghana from when I was volunteering over there). I have loads of Youtube videos but they are all on different organisation’s websites. Consider it put on the immediate to do list!

I can see the value in Twitter, but to be honest, I just don’t know what to be saying day to day, hour to hour, and I hate spamming people with drivel.

Anyway, back on topic. The problem with being involved in a number of social media platforms is that there isn’t enough hours in the day to be populating them…

And the magic acorn falling from the sky is…..HootSuite.

Basically it acts like a dashboard. You can add the social media platforms that you use onto it and do all your comments, blogs, retweets, feedback, reading etc. from the one place. Its amazing. You can also schedule when you want messages to be posted. This is really useful as sometimes you might have a block of time in which you can give to populating your social media accounts, but you don’t want it all coming through at the same time, right? So just schedule things for hours, days, even weeks ahead! The downside to this is that things you schedule to post in advance may not be so current and relevant when the post is displayed. Just a small thing to be wary of.

I need a  lot more work to discover the full benefits and ins and outs of HootSuite (there are free and premium accounts) but I’m really excited to have found it. Thanks Greg!

Apps…Idea Creations!

Myself and my webactivate team have been working on this digital marketing strategy assignment. We came up with the idea of creating an app for busy parents everywhere who want to find dun things to do with their children. My role was to research into who, what, where, how and why we think this product/ service is viable.

Based on the lean start up model we decided to look at services already existing in the market that currently don’t work and see how we could improve on this.

Our idea came from a real life problem that exists within our group. Two of the members of our group are parents and were discussing the fact that it is very difficult to find a variety of things to do to entertain their children in social settings, in particular but not exclusively in rural settings. We agreed that the problem wasn’t due to a shortage of things to do, but being busy with life, it can be very difficult for parents to trawl though the internet to find places of interests and activities do with one’s children.

I did research into potential competitors and looked at finance. Ideally we don’t want to charge users for the app as plenty of us are tight on cash at the minute.  I also drew up a survey monkey questionnaire to see what current problems are facing parents with regard to entertaining their children and of course whether or not they would want to use an app like this.

The responses mainly showed that many parents, especially single parents and parents living in rural areas found that they were very isolated and that it was difficult to find other parents and children to engage with. Others had issued in relation to cost of activities or trawling through the net, wasting time trying to find activities to do with their kids. Most of whom were surveyed said that they would find app of this sort very useful.

So we would need to get revenue through Sponsors, Advertising and Partnerships such as Board Fáílte.

Taking all this into consideration we created an app that was simple, useful and user friendly. The app is focussed on activities for parents and children between the ages of 0-12.  Child’s play app is two-fold:

  1. It provides a location based search engine which displays all the indoor and outdoor, free and paid for activities, supervised activities, events and downloadable activities( for when you are stuck inside or have run out of ideas)
  2. It provides a social network platform where you can create your own profile and search for other parents as well as join or create parent and child group in your area. There is a feedback and suggestions forum where you can discuss with other parents about the reliability of certain activity centres and locations, recommendations, feedback on positive and negative experiences, latest updates and news, child-friendly places, where not to go, as well as arrange to team up and do activities together.

In order for Child’s Play to work successfully it has to be based on trust, feedback and reliability. The forum is the perfect platform for parents to gain this trust and learn about what will and won’t suit them and their children.

Check out the prototype I build…And bear in mind it is very early days yet.

When Social Media Campaigns go Belly Up!

McDonalds Disasters

Image
#McDStories

One of the funniest and disastrous social media campaigns last year had to have been the McDonalds Twitter campaign. The idea behind it was to promote the brand’s guarantee of fresh produce.  It was all going well at the beginning when they used the hastag #MeetTheFarmers. This gave them a good marketing opportunity as farmers  franchised out to McDonalds would tweet over the course of the day. The problem arose later in the day when MacDonalds social media PR introduced the hashtag #McDstories. Automatically when I look at this I see “DISASTER STORIES” and it was clear as day that a lot of people were interpreting it in this way too!

I have to say that with billion dollar faceless multinational corporations like McDonalds that rape and pillage the Earth’s natural resources and are known to have been unethical to their staff in many areas in the world I have absolutely no pity for them.

Here are some of the Tweets that displayed on Business Insider.com. No laughing now!

mc1 mc2 mc3

Within a few hours their strategy was to explain that although the initial hastag worked well, the following hashtag was supposed to talk about suppliers campaign stories and as it was not used in the right context, they pulled it.  According to the Business Insider “There were 72,788 mentions of McDonald’s overall that day so the traction of #McDStories was a tiny percentage (2%) of that”. Once they pulled the second hastag conversations reduced dramatically from thousands to dozens. They were extremely lucky in this case and McDonalds mved fast in order to prevent an all out long-term back lash. Oh well McDonalds, maybe next time?!!
